JEE Main and NEET UG together: where the syllabi share units

JEE Main and NEET UG both ask Physics and Chemistry. NTA's 2026 syllabi share 40 of their unit names between them, while Mathematics appears only in JEE Main and Biology only in NEET UG. This page lines the two up, from the documents, so you can size the work for both.

AspirantGoal is an independent app. It is not affiliated with or endorsed by the National Testing Agency or any exam authority. This page lines up what NTA’s 2026 documents print for JEE Main and for NEET UG, as checked on 23 October 2026. NTA’s current documents are the authority, so read them before you plan around any figure.

The two papers side by side

JEE Main has more than one paper. This page uses Paper 1 (B.E. / B.Tech.), the one that tests Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry.

Item JEE Main Paper 1 NEET UG
Conducted by National Testing Agency National Testing Agency
Mode Computer based test (CBT) mode only [1] Pen and paper mode, as a single day and single shift exam, the same as in 2025 [3]
Subjects Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry, with equal weightage [1] Physics, Chemistry and Biology, with Biology covering Botany and Zoology [3]
Questions and marks 75 questions for 300 marks: per subject 20 in Section A and 5 in Section B, 100 marks [1] 180 compulsory questions for a total of 720 marks. Physics: 45 questions, 180 marks. Chemistry: 45 questions, 180 marks. Biology (Botany and Zoology): 90 questions, 360 marks. [3]
Question types Section A: multiple choice questions. Section B: numerical value questions, answered as an integer rounded off to the nearest integer on an on-screen keypad. [1] Multiple choice questions with four options and a single correct answer or best option [3]
Duration 3 hours [1] 180 minutes, which is three hours [3]
Marking Correct answer +4, incorrect answer minus 1, unanswered or marked for review without an answer 0, in both sections [1] Four marks for a correct or most appropriate answer; no mark for an unanswered question. Minus one mark for any incorrect option marked. [3]

Physics: the units each syllabus prints

Both syllabi print 20 Physics units in the same order. 19 of the names are identical. The remaining unit is named differently: it is unit 1 in both lists, printed as Units and Measurements in the JEE Main syllabus and as Physics and measurement in the NEET UG syllabus.

Chemistry: the units each syllabus prints

Both syllabi print 20 Chemistry units. 20 of the names are identical once capitals and hyphens are ignored. JEE Main lists them in one run, and NEET UG lists them in three groups: physical, inorganic and organic chemistry.

Units in only one of the two

JEE Main also prints 14 Mathematics units, and NEET UG also prints 10 Biology units.

Only in JEE Main, Mathematics: SETS, RELATIONS AND FUNCTIONS; COMPLEX NUMBERS AND QUADRATIC EQUATIONS; MATRICES AND DETERMINANTS; PERMUTATIONS AND COMBINATIONS; BINOMIAL THEOREM AND ITS SIMPLE APPLICATIONS; SEQUENCE AND SERIES; LIMIT, CONTINUITY AND DIFFERENTIABILITY; Integral calculus; Differential equations; Co-ordinate geometry; THREE DIMENSIONAL GEOMETRY; VECTOR ALGEBRA; STATISTICS AND PROBABILITY; TRIGONOMETRY.

Only in NEET UG, Biology: Diversity in living world; Structural organisation in animals and plants; Cell structure and function; Plant physiology; Human physiology; Reproduction; Genetics and evolution; Biology and human welfare; Biotechnology and its applications; Ecology and environment.

What the overlap does to the hours

JEE Main prints 54 units in all (20 Physics, 20 Chemistry and 14 Mathematics). NEET UG prints 50 (20 Physics, 20 Chemistry and 10 Biology). Counting Physics unit 1 under its two names as one unit, the two lists share 40 units, so the lists together hold 64 different units, against 104 if you counted each list on its own.

Example. An illustration, with made-up numbers. Suppose one first pass through a unit takes 5 hours. Counted separately, 104 units come to 520 hours. Counted once each, 64 units come to 320 hours, which is 200 hours fewer. That saving holds only where the two syllabi ask for the same depth under a shared name.

A shared unit name does not make the sub-topics under it identical. The two documents are separate, and this page compares only the names they print. Before you treat a unit as finished for both exams, read the topics under it in the JEE Main syllabus [2] and in the NEET UG syllabus [4].

A free tracker for both

Download the combined JEE Main and NEET UG tracker as a CSV file. It has 64 rows, one for each unit, with a column that says whether the unit is in JEE Main, in NEET UG or in both. The other columns are the same as in the printable syllabus tracker, and it is free and needs no sign-up.

How AspirantGoal handles two exams

  • Each exam is its own goal, with its own syllabus template, so JEE Main and NEET UG each keep their own units, stages and progress.
  • Month, Week and Today list the subjects of both goals together, each tagged with its exam, and show available time, assigned time and one buffer for the whole period.
  • A subject archived by itself stays archived when its goal is restored.

See Preparing for two exams at once for the method, and the pages for JEE Main and NEET UG for the structure and units of each.

What this page does not tell you

It does not say whether to prepare for both exams, how many hours either needs, or how a shared unit should be studied for each. It compares printed names, not the depth of the questions. It does not predict marks, ranks or selection. Dates, fees, age limits, attempts and eligibility are in NTA’s notices.
