How to choose a study app for your exam: ten questions to ask

A study app is worth choosing for what it counts, what it asks of your phone and what it promises. Ten questions cover those points, and each one says what a good answer looks like. AspirantGoal's own answers follow, so you can check them.

Most study apps look alike in a list of features. They differ in what they count, what they need from your phone and what they say they will do for you. These ten questions work for any app, including this one. Ask them before you spend a week of your preparation inside an app.

The ten questions

1. Does it count what you finished, or only how long you sat? Hours are an input. A topic you have finished is a result. An app that shows only hours can show a good week for a syllabus that has barely moved. Look for a separate number for finished work, such as coverage, and for a way to record more than one pass through a topic.

2. Can it hold more than one exam or goal on one plan? If you have two exams, or a semester of papers, a single list hides which one is slipping. Look for separate goals with their own dates and syllabus, shown together with one figure for the hours you have left.

3. Does it fit your exam? Look for a ready syllabus for your exam that you can edit, and for a way to add your own exam or goal when yours is not listed. Check any ready syllabus against the exam body’s own document.

4. Where does your data live, and does it work offline? Look for a clear statement of what is stored on your phone, what is sent anywhere and whether a backup is optional and encrypted. An app you can use on a train without signal is an app you will use.

5. What does app blocking need from your phone? Blocking other apps needs Android permissions. A good app names each permission, says why it needs it and explains it before sending you to settings. You should be able to revoke each one.

6. Can the notes hold what you really use? Photos of a page, a PDF, a voice note and a highlight are how many people revise. Look for notes that keep them together, and for a way to send a note to a friend that keeps the marks.

7. Does it promise results? An app cannot know your marks, your rank or your selection. Be careful with any app that predicts them. Charts of what you recorded are fine. Forecasts of an exam score are a claim nobody can support.

8. Who makes it, and can you reach them? Look for a named company, a postal address and an email that answers.

9. How are prices shown? Look for the price, the renewal price and the payment provider before you confirm, and a plain way to cancel. Check what is free and what needs a paid plan.

10. Does it bring study material, or expect yours? Some apps sell classes, question banks or test series. Others only organise what you already study from. Decide which you need, and do not expect one kind of app to be the other.

AspirantGoal’s answers

Question The answer
1. Finished or hours Study time comes from the timer. Coverage, the share of stages you have finished, is a separate number. A round counts another pass through a stage.
2. More than one goal Each exam or goal has its own date, syllabus and progress. Month, Week and Today list them together and show one buffer.
3. Fit Ready syllabus templates ship for UPSC Civil Services, UPSC Engineering Services, SSC CGL, SSC CHSL, GATE, UGC NET, NEET UG, JEE Main, JEE Advanced and RRB NTPC. They are editable, and any other exam or goal is set up as your own goal.
4. Data and offline Sessions, notes and history are stored on your phone, and you can study and record sessions offline. A backup to your own Google Drive is optional and encrypted.
5. App blocking Strict Mode, a Pro feature, needs usage access, display over other apps and notification access. The app explains each one before it opens Android settings.
6. Notes AG NoteCanvas holds text, photos, PDFs and voice, with pen highlights and audio pins, and a note can be sent as one .agsz file.
7. Promises None. The charts show what you recorded, and the app does not predict a score or promise selection.
8. Who Ceres Canopus Pvt Ltd, with the registered office and two email addresses on the facts page.
9. Prices The Pricing page states the India prices as the Terms do. The amount due now, the renewal price and the payment provider are shown before you confirm, and a subscription is cancelled in Google Play or in the app. The core app is free, and Strict Mode, AG Vault and Preparation Journey need Pro.
10. Material AspirantGoal has no classes, courses, mentoring, question bank or mock tests. You study from your own material.

See the Features page for how each part works, and Study hours are not syllabus coverage for question 1 with the arithmetic.

What this page does not tell you

It does not rank any app and it says nothing about any other app’s features. It does not say which app suits your exam. The answers for AspirantGoal come from its own documents and from checks on a real phone on the dates given in the sources, and the app can change after them.
